  • 24 markets covered — 13 commodities, 7 FX pairs and 4 equity ETFs
  • 156 weeks of COT history for every market
  • 5 data modules behind a single API key
  • Weekly COT refresh after every CFTC release

COT positioning: See where the smart money stands

Every week we turn the CFTC Commitment of Traders report into a clear read of commercial hedgers — the producers and merchants closest to physical supply and demand — and how long they have held their position.

  • COT Index from 0 to 100 for every market
  • Bullish, neutral or bearish zone, plus a stage: fresh, developing, mature or fading
  • 156 weeks of history per market, ready to chart
  • Combined readings for 7 major FX pairs
  • A one-call screener across the whole catalog

Seasonality & statistical bias: Know when markets tend to move

Curated seasonal windows and day-of-week tendencies, each with a direction and the reason behind it, alongside candle statistics computed from daily price history.

  • Seasonal windows with direction, impact (low, medium, high) and the driver behind them
  • Day-of-week tendencies for grains, metals and major FX pairs
  • Candle statistics: weekday close vs. open, streak follow-through, average returns by month and day, range profile
  • Sample sizes included, so you know how much history backs every number

Volatility radar & news: Catch what positioning can't see yet

COT is weekly and seasonality is historical. The radar answers the other question: has something changed right now? Pair it with an asset-filtered news wire.

  • Volatility sensor that flags abnormal price movement
  • Headline sensor that surfaces high-impact news per market
  • Asset-filtered news wire with sentiment
  • Every sensor reports whether it is live, partial or offline — no guesswork

Built for businesses

  • Brokers & trading platforms — Put positioning and seasonal context next to your charts and order tickets — without building a CFTC pipeline.
  • Research & advisory firms — Feed COT zones, seasonal windows and screeners into internal dashboards, client notes and morning briefs.
  • Fintech & trading apps — Ship signals your users understand on day one, with plain-language explanations built into every reading.
  • Education & media — Power lessons, newsletters and market commentary with consistent, weekly-updated data.

Why PositionAlpha

  • Signals, not spreadsheets — You receive computed, structured outputs ready to display — not raw CFTC files to clean, align and model yourself.
  • Explainable by design — Readings come with zones, stages, impact levels and short notes, so your users see why — not just a number.
  • Honest data — When something is unavailable the API says so explicitly. It never fills gaps with placeholder values.
  • Built for production — Separate sandbox and production environments, a versioned API, clear rate limits and scheduled maintenance with advance notice.

Questions businesses ask us

Is the PositionAlpha API public?

No. It is a private API licensed to businesses. Access is granted by agreement, with credentials issued for a sandbox environment first and production after onboarding.

What data does the API provide?

COT positioning (COT Index, zone, stage, 3-year history, FX pairs and a screener), seasonal windows with impact, day-of-week tendencies, candle statistics, a volatility and event radar, and an asset-filtered news wire — for 13 commodities, 7 major FX pairs and 4 equity ETFs (SPY, QQQ, IWM, DIA).

How do equity ETFs (SPY, QQQ, IWM, DIA) work?

Those catalog ids are the ETFs for price and candles. COT for the same ids comes from the matching CME/CBOT index futures (E-mini S&P 500, E-mini Nasdaq-100, E-mini Russell 2000, DJIA × $5). There is no separate CFTC COT report for the ETF itself.

Is this raw CFTC data?

No. The API delivers computed analytics built on public sources such as the CFTC Commitment of Traders report. You get structured readings ready to display, not raw files.

How often is the data updated?

COT data updates weekly after each CFTC release (positions as of Tuesday, published Friday). Seasonal windows change by month, and the radar and news wire update continuously.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on your product, the modules you need and the number of end users who see the data. Contact us with your use case and we'll send a tailored proposal.
