Positioning
Small Traders
Non-reportable retail-sized futures positions — often used as a soft contrarian crowd gauge.
What it is
Small traders are non-reportable positions, typically individual retail traders with smaller position sizes. They represent the 'crowd' and are often positioned opposite to smart money at market extremes.
Why it matters
Small traders are often wrong at market extremes, making their positioning a useful contrarian indicator. When retail traders are extremely long, it can be bearish, and when they're extremely short, it can be bullish. Their positioning is weighted 20% in COT Score calculations.
How traders use it
Use small trader positioning as a contrarian signal. When retail is extremely positioned on one side, consider the opposite direction. However, don't rely solely on this - combine with other indicators.
Example
If small traders are 85% net long on gold while commercials are net short, this contrarian setup might suggest a potential top, as retail is often wrong at extremes.
Deeper context
The “non-reportable” bucket is residual — it is not a clean survey of retail brokerage clients. Still, historically it has clustered with late-cycle enthusiasm. Treat extremes as a warning light, not an automatic fade. On PositionAlpha the light weight in the COT Score keeps retail from dominating the headline number.
